Case Study: High Resolution Surround Music Channel
Guangzhou Digital Media Group (GZDMG) and DTS Inc. (Nasdaq: DTSI) announced plans to deploy the first phase of a digital music service featuring DTS Digital Surround Soundâ„¢. Unlike many current cable TV music services, the new service will deliver music in discrete DTS 5.1 Digital Surround; delivering sound quality on par with DVD video discs.
When fully deployed, end-users will simply be able to connect a co-axial cable over SPDIF connection to any DTS-featured home theater system and audio-video receiver. This will allow cable subscribers to enjoy a variety of music content mixed an encoded in DTS 5.1 Digital Surround at digital transfer rates of up to 1.5 Mbps-vastly superior to most current cable TV music services.
Since 2008, by collaborating with the set-top box manufacturers, IC manufacturers, Media Asset Management System providers, and Distribution System providers; GZDMG and DTS have been working together building service platforms and testing end-to-end systems including cable network transmission and home surround sound reception. After more than a year of testing and development, the service is targeted to launch by year end.
On August 27th, 2009 GZMG and DTS jointly showcased the DTS end-to-end broadcasting solution at a DTS Seminar conducted at the BIRTV event in Beijing.
With a world-wide installed base of over 100 million DTS-featured home theater systems, the potential for cable TV operators to offer high quality surround audio represents an opportunity for value-added service. The GDMG service represents the first steps for cable operators in revolutionizing the broadcast entertainment experience utilizing DTS Technologies.
